Introducing the Holy Spirit

Who is the INC movement?

We are Pentecostal in our doctrine and really we began as Charismatic Church (for a definition see -  Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians make up about 584 million adherents in the world which is 8.5 % of total world population and 27% of the total Christian Population.

BTW Christians make up 31% of the total world population.

Manifestations of the acts of the Holy Spirit are common in the bible in both the OT and NT.

For example, OT – Abraham has a visitation of God, Hagar sees an angel, Jacob receives a dream, Elijah raised a child to life, Daniel walks out of the Lion’s den, Isaiah sees a vision of God.

For example, NT. – Mary sees an angel, three wise men warned in a dream, Jesus walks on water, blind man healed by the roadside, Lazarus raised from the dead, Lame man healed at Gate Beautiful by the disciples, Paul raises a young man from the dead, Peter sees a vision of unclean animals, Paul is instructed by the Holy Spirit to go to Macedonia.

For the Church to experience in our own age the manifestations of the Holy Spirit is only natural and to be expected. It would be wrong for it not to happen. Jesus statement was that greater things than these shall you do because I go to be with the Father. It’s these greater things that are the product of a Holy Spirit empowered life. If the disciples were commanded to go preach the gospel heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out devils then to not do those things today would man that the job is done or God has changed His mind.

The Holy Spirit in the OT

Last week we spoke on the trinity – plurality of God “Let us make man” – Gen 1:26.

The words “Holy Spirit” occur twice in the OT but mostly the term the Spirit of the Lord is referring to the Holy Spirit. The NT develops the whole picture of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Examples of the Holy Spirit in the OT

Gen 1:2 The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Psalm 51 Take not thy Holy Spirit from me

Isaiah 61:1 & Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me

Throughout the bible picture language reveals much about the Holy Spirit as He is depicted and symbolised by the symbols of water, fire, oil, the dove and wind.

Throughout the OT the Spirit of the Lord coming upon people to enable them is a common theme.

Moses raised up leaders over the tribes and God took of the spirit that was upon him and placed it on these leaders.

The Spirit of the lord came upon King Saul and he prophesied; The spirit of the Lord came upon Samson, Elijah David, and many others.

It’s interesting to note this language is clear that in the OT the Spirit came upon people but only in the NT after salvation does the spirit indwell the person.

This is perfectly illustrated by Jesus statement He has been with you but shall be in you. John 14:17 AMP  The Spirit of Truth, Whom the world cannot receive (welcome, take to its heart), because it does not see Him or know and recognize Him. But you know and recognize Him, for He lives with you [constantly] and will be in you.

His Role.

For Jesus-empowerment Luke 4:18

It’s important to note that for Jesus He was born of the spirit, conceived in the womb of Mary and born as the only begotten Son of God, but later receives the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove at the baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist that begins a period of Ministry. It as only after this experience of the Holy Spirit coming upon Jesus that He healed the sick, feed the 5,000 and walked on water. (Luke 4:18)

This forerunner experience is exactly the same for us as believers, we are born of the Spirit when we received Christ and are born again. We are born from above, John 3:  Our human spirit is regenerated by the Holy Spirit at salvation, our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and He dwells within us, yet God calls us to the second experience after salvation where we receive the enduement of power so that we can be empowered for ministry.

For us as believers primarily He is the Paraclete.

John 114:16 AMP    And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever—

John 14:26 AMP But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.

John 15:26 AMP But when the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, Whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth Who comes (proceeds) from the Father, He [Himself] will testify regarding Me.

John 16:7 AMP However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you].

His role within us includes, He prays, He guides, He teaches, He speaks, He searches, He Testifies He gives us the words to speak and He enables us to be a witness.

The Language of the Holy Spirit is dreams and visions God often used this vehicle to communicate in both the OT and the NT.  Numbers 12:6 And He said, Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make Myself known to him in a vision and speak to him in a dream. Daniel 1:17 As for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all [kinds of] visions and dreams.

Examples Jacob’s ladder, Ezekiel’s vision of the dry bones, Zacharias vision of the angel, Peter’s vision of the sheet let down.

Words are very powerful – during creation God spoke let there be light etc.

God’s word quick and powerful, won’t return to Him void Is 55:11

Holy Spirt wants to give power to our words to create give life and heal.

He gives the right words, but also he gives power to those words.

OT at tower of babel God had to scatter the ill intent of man who plotted to build a tower to reach heaven. He shows the power of unity and one language

Gen 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language and of one accent and mode of expression. 6 And the Lord said, Behold, they are one people and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.

7 Come, let Us go down and there confound (mix up, confuse) their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

9 Therefore the name of it was called Babel—because there the Lord confounded the language of all the earth; and from that place the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

The whole point of Genesis 11 is that man in unity with one language had power that God says was unlimited, but it was for a wrong purpose. So God confused their languages in order to frustrate their improper goals.

Later on the day of Pentecost the church experiences speaking in new languages that God gives.  God restores a dynamic of language to His church in order to give back this power of expression, unity and purpose. Now it was not man’s idea to reach heaven but the purpose of God working through men as they walked in unity now given the power of a language that comes directly from the Holy Spirit himself – the whole church moving in the one purpose of the Spirit of God.

ONE THING TO DO – Seek God and pray that you would be daily filled with the Holy Spirit.
