RELATIONSHIP GOALS 2 - LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD
LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD
THEME VISION – Relationship goals – is to receive revelation from God to enable us to do all relationships well. To understand love, and be enabled to prosper in all relationships and to show others the way.
REVIEW - God is love, The trinity practice perfect and complete love within these three persons. Love pre-dates creation. If God was not a trinity – he could not be love, could not practice love. Love is about our relationship with others. God designed us to be a love creature, we are made in His image, therefore we are designed to love as He loves. We are designed to give and receive love. Sin messes up everything and creates hatred, chaos, violence and turmoil – leading to broken relationships at every level.
YOU ARE A VESSEL DESIGNED TO GIVE AND RECEIVE LOVE.
TODAY WE ARE LOOKING AT THE VERTICLE KIND OF RELATIONSHIP – EVERY OTHER WEEK WE WILL BE LOOKING AT THE HORIZONTAL KIND OF RELATIONSHIPS.
FIRST COMMANDMENT. – LOVE GOD
Deuteronomy 6:5 AMP You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and with all your soul and with all your strength [your entire being].
IN THREE GOSPELS JESUS QUOTED THIS VERSE.
Luke 10:25-29AMP And a certain lawyer [an expert in Mosaic Law] stood up to test Him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he replied, “You shall love(agape) the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 Jesus said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this habitually and you will live.” 29 But he, wishing to justify and vindicate himself, asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
IN THE OLD TESTAMENT MEN ARE COMMANDED TO LOVE GOD - IN THE NEW TESTAMENT WE LOVE HIM BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US.
In the OT men loved God because they feared God. They saw the greatness of God, David worshiped Him in the beauty of His holiness, Isaiah saw Him in the temple and said I am a man of unclean lips, Hosea took a prostitute as a wife to show what it was like for God as a husband to have Israel follow after other gods.
Deuteronomy 10:12 AMP “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require from you, but to fear [and worship] the Lord your God [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect], to walk [that is, to live each and every day] in all His ways and to love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul [your choices, your thoughts, your whole being],
In the NT we saw so graphically the crucifixion of Jesus. In all that He suffered so willingly, we saw His love for all people. His selfless life and death showed the greatest love story ever told.
1 John 4:16-19 AMP We have come to know [by personal observation and experience], and have believed [with deep, consistent faith] the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides continually in him. 17 In this [union and fellowship with Him], love is completed and perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment [with assurance and boldness to face Him]; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love [dread does not exist]. But perfect (complete, full-grown) love drives out fear, because fear involves [the expectation of divine] punishment, so the one who is afraid [of God’s judgment] is not perfected in love [has not grown into a sufficient understanding of God’s love]. 19 We love, because He first loved us.
DO YOU LOVE GOD? AND HOW IS THIS EXPRESSED?
1 John 4:8 AMP The one who does not love has not become acquainted with God [does not and never did know Him], for God is love. [He is the originator of love, and it is an enduring attribute of His nature.]
DAVID’S LOVE FOR GOD
Psalm 42:1 AMP As the deer pants [longingly] for the water brooks, So my soul pants [longingly] for You, O God.
Although David was a warrior, a man of war, yet he had this deep love relationship with God. He wrote most of the psalms – songs of worship and adoration towards God.
HOW DID HE EXPRESS LOVE?
Read the psalms… singing, worship, obedience, trusting in God, calling on God in prayer, in times of anguish, in times of rejoicing. THERE WAS A DIALOGUE!
JESUS LOVED THE FATHER – HOW DID HE EXPRESS THAT LOVE?
Mark 1:35 (AMP) Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left [the house], and went out to a secluded place, and was praying there.
John 15:10 AMP If you keep My commandments and obey My teaching, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.
DO YOU LOVE GOD? AND HOW IS THIS EXPRESSED?
John 14:15 AMP “If you [really] love Me, you will keep and obey My commandments. (NOT The other way around)
This does not mean - I will obey God and by this He will know that I love Him. NO – It means when you love Him you will want to obey Him from the heart, not motivated by fear or guilt or a sense of duty but by LOVE!
SOMETIMES OUR LOVE FOR GOD IS TAKEN AWAY.
EVER BEEN ANGRY AT GOD? EVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED?
We love god, but at times we are angry and hate God because we are hurting, and can’t see truth and reality, we are deceived by sin and wrong expectations, prevent us from loving God. Our thinking is faulty, God only asked of us obedience, it was our expectations that were off the mark. If God choose to give us this much fruit, who are we to say, “No, God”
PETER DO YOU LOVE ME? (John 21:15-17 AMP)
Peter denied Jesus. He failed to meet his own expectations, He was ashamed. Jesus asked him, do you agape me? Peter fell hard – his disappointment in himself blocked hs agape for Jesus but he came to say I phileo you Jesus. Jesus used this experience to break pride in Peter and form him for the future.
IF YOU’RE HURTING, BROKEN, WRECKED BY LIFE AND TRAGEDIES AND UNFULFILLED EXPECTATIONS – IF YOU FEEL GOD HAS LET YOU DOWN. LOOK AGAIN AT JESUS AND HIS LIFE AND DEATH.
He came to Mary and Martha, they were hurting – why didn’t you come? (John 11:33-35 AMP) Jesus wept. But He came to teach the world that he was the resurrection and the life.
DO YOU SPEND TIME WITH THE ONE YOU LOVE?
LOVE BY – WORSHIP, PRAYER,
As we see the real Jesus – His agonising death on the cross, His willingness to suffer for us - we fall in love with Him, we bow our sin soaked hearts and dump the pride that has been so much a deception in our lives and God gives us a new heart.
Ephesians 3:19AMP and [that you may come] to know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge [without experience], that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself].
SEE THE REAL JESUS, MEDITATE ON HIS LIFE AND DEATH FOR YOU. SEE HIS SUFFERING AS BEING FOR YOU. EMBRACE HIS LOVE AND FORGIVENESS. WHAT YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND, TRUST THAT GOD IS WORKING ALL THINGS TOGETHER FOR GOOD.
