BUT FIRST, PRAYER - PART 1
BUT FIRST, PRAY – WEEK 1 – 8 SEPT 2019
DO PEOPLE EVER REALLY CHANGE?
Yes they do…. Me! The story of the documentary I saw about Robert De Castella and Alberto Salazar.
PRAYER IS ENGAGING WITH GOD – STEPPING OUTSIDE THE HUMDRUM OF DAILY EXISTENCE AND INTO THE DIVINE – THE GOD SPACE – YOUR CONNECTION WITH YOUR CREATOR AND SAVIOUR.
GOD ACHES FOR A MEETING PLACE WITH YOU.
QUOTES ON PRAYER
"To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing." - Martin Luther
"The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, 'O God, forgive me,' or 'Help me.'" - Billy Graham
"Prayer is simply talking to God like a friend and should be the easiest thing we do each day." - Joyce Meyer
"Prayer does not change God, but it changes him who prays." - Soren Kierkegaard
"Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition, and listening to His voice in the depth of our hearts." - Mother Teresa
"Prayer makes a godly man, and puts within him the mind of Christ, the mind of humility, of self-surrender, of service, of pity, and of prayer. If we really pray, we will become more like God, or else we will quit praying." - E.M. Bounds
PRAYER CHANGES US
Think of the relationship Jesus had with the Father while here on earth and emulate that……
Matthew 14:10-14 AMPC
10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 And his head was brought in on a platter and given to the little maid, and she brought it to her mother. 12 And John’s disciples came and took up the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. 13 When Jesus heard it, He withdrew from there privately in a boat to a solitary place. But when the crowds heard of it, they followed Him [by land] on foot from the towns. 14 When He went ashore and saw a great throng of people, He had compassion (pity and deep sympathy) for them and cured their sick.
Jesus knew John well – he was his cousin, they grew up in separate places but they were blood and would have met in Jerusalem yearly for feast times.
Imagine Jesus hearing the news of John’s beheading?
In His humanity, for Jesus was fully man and fully God, this would have been a time of grief. If Jesus experienced grief at the hardness of men’s hearts, how much more for the gruesome loss of the greatest prophet of all at the hands of godless men.
When Jesus heard it, He withdrew from there privately in a boat to a solitary place. This is the place of prayer. Jesus sought solace in a private place alone to grieve with His Father. In processing this trauma, He heard from His Father words of comfort, understanding and perspective. Afterwards He was so centred and at peace that He could be deeply moved by the plight of other people in their needs.
What does it mean?
It is the experience of something beyond yourself, of something far greater and more than just your own thoughts feelings and knowledge.
And these experiences can change you in lasting ways. In one study from 2014, students looked up at a towering grove of 200-feet-tall eucalyptus trees for just one minute — but after that awe-inspiring encounter with nature, they reported felt less self-centered, and they even behaved more generously when given the chance to help someone. Other research shows that after transcendent experiences, people feel more satisfied with their lives and rate their lives as more meaningful. They also have higher levels of oxytocin — the hormone that promotes bonding between two people —coursing through their blood.
Rom 1:20 AMP
20 For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse [altogether without any defense or justification],
What does it mean?
It means God is present with us here now, accessible, touchable, in a way we can experience and connect with.
PRAYER IS TO EXPERIENCE THE TRANSCENDENT TO MAKE GOD IMMANENT.
